EEC Closure Letter

Eec01

Dear OMS Community,

We wanted to keep you informed on the economic impact the shelter-at-home order is having within our Old Mission School community. All aspects of our operation have been impacted however, both the Thrift Store and our Early Education Center at Nativity have experienced the deepest effects and we have had to make some very difficult decisions.

After consultation with the Superintendent of the Diocese of Monterey, Rev. Kelly Vandehey, our Pastor and Canonical Administrator, and the Old Mission School Advisory Board, it has become clear we must close our Nativity campus at the conclusion of this school year. We simply do not have the enrollment necessary to sustain our Early Education program for the coming year. We know that the preschool and TK programs are important to our families and we want you to know that this decision was not taken lightly. It was difficult and painful.

It is our hope that when we get on the other side of this pandemic, we will be in a much better position to reinstate an EEC program. We are forming a task force specifically to look at possible alternatives for the 2021-2022 school year, and beyond. Additionally, we are actively exploring the possibility of bringing our TK program to the main campus as early as the coming year if enrollment and space will allow for it. We may not have a clear answer to this question for some weeks but wanted to make sure we provide our parents and staff with the most up to date information to make the appropriate decisions for the coming year.

Finally, we ask for your prayers for our community and for the families who are suffering, for the dedicated employees and friends who have been furloughed or have experienced employment interruptions. We ask you to continue to pray for our parents and families who are loving and nurturing our students through a crisis that would have been unimaginable at the start of the school year. It is during difficult times like the ones we face today, that we are reminded of Proverbs 3:5-6 which says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

God’s peace to you all,
